Our Ministry

Rock of Ages exists to share rock-solid hope in Jesus to Rim Country and supports the world-wide gospel ministry of the WELS. There is no obligation, but we would love to share more with you. You can view Sunday messages online [click here].

Learning an instrument can be challenging, but it is rewarding, and anyone can do it if they take the time. We look forward to a great summer of music with everyone!

FAQ

What is the program for?

At Rock of Ages we believe that next to the gospel music is one of the greatest gifts from God. We aim to share both because of the joy they bring us.

What ages can participate?

All ages! Enrollment opens first for children PreK-8th grade enrolled in the full program.  If some lesson slots remain open in May, we are glad to fill them with anyone who is interested in learning music.

Who are the teachers?

Sydney Peterson is a college student studying music instruction at Martin Luther College in New Ulm Minnesota. Learn more about the ministry of MLC [click here]. She is our main teacher for 2021 and will be teaching the Bonus Lessons. She is excited to join our community for the summer.

Tom Barthel is serving as pastor at Rock of Ages. He will be instructing violin and some of the stringed instrument students. He plays multiple instruments and has taught various ages from PreK and on. He loves sharing Jesus and sharing music.

A few other volunteers at Rock of Ages may also be there to help with some of the activities or games on Mondays.

Can I join with my child?

Absolutely! Joining with your child is encouraged, but not required.

What about music books?

The program is free, but a registration fee of $10 will help cover the cost of books. Your teacher will provide any instruction books at the first lesson. Checks can be made to “Rock of Ages Lutheran” with the memo “music book fee”.

Where can I get an instrument?

If you are looking to purchase one your teachers can offer some suggestions.

If you need a rental instrument, we recommend Payson’s Quigtone Music & Supply. They have all our 2021 instrument offerings available with many starting at $20 a month. Rock of Ages is not affiliated with Quigtone Music.

What if I have to miss a lesson?

Please notify your teacher if you will miss any group sessions or one-on-one lessons: Sydney Peterson 605-553-8866; or Tom Barthel 928-612-8463.

A limited number of rescheduling slots will be made available for catch-up lessons. Lessons slots are first-come first-serve. Please note that two unexcused absences will result in your slot opening for someone else.

What is the Bonus Lesson option?

Individual Bonus Lessons can take the place of our Monday Group sessions. These can be scheduled right after each individual lesson or family unit.  Siblings can join together.

What is the Monday Group Session?

The full program enrollment includes the Monday Group Sessions. These will include group playing & singing (harmony or unison), a snack break, rhythm exercises, an occasional music craft, games, and a gospel-themed song.
